Case study

Skytec undertook a detailed structural engineering evaluation including site investigations, geotechnical testing and design work for a civic centre (two levels, 4120 square metres) made up of governance offices (councillors and Mayor), an administration building (collaboration space for council officers/corporate), meeting rooms and the main council records library.  


Skytec completed a feasibility study for the seismic strengthening of the two level offices in which a concept for the seismic strengthening and a rough order of costs was provided to council for their decision making process.  The seismic strengthening concept had to allow the building to be in operation following a strong seismic event.

In the same district Skytec undertook structural engineering services and design work for the council owned building  memorial hall. The memorial hall  (3485 square metres, 1 level (high stud)) consisted of three portions – an auditorium (used as a performance centre), multi-purpose hall used for community and corporate events and a sports hall with a floating floor and spectator seating as well as ticket booth, as well as full catering facilities/canteen for event and customer service.

Skytec's solution considered the needs of the client (in this case a council) in achieving a flexible workplace solution/public space and ensuring functionality/access whilst carrying out the scope of services.


One of the other challenges was incorporating the cost-benefit and feasibility of doing the seismic strengthening in parts (dividing the memorial hall up based on potential funding availability). We were able to factor this costing element into our design for both i.e. the whole building and in separate parts. 

The quality of design was to a high standard for each building and based on our latest innovation concerning structural evaluation methodology (Build-Sure™).
