Historic building assessment

Skytec provided condition assessment and structural testing for a Category 2 heritage building in Christchurch, leading up to a feasibility study to provide recommendations for cost-effective seismic strengthening and repair scheme. The project involved structural/geotechnical engineering and surveying/geotechnical testing, utilised under a best practice Heritage-Sure™ process.

The challenges in the project were how make the retention of its heritage fabric affordable. Skytec was able to address this by undertaking the necessary engineering testing and investigations assessment under Heritage-Sure™. This resulted in improved interest from council (financial incentives in this case) and the public to have the building retained.

Heritage listed council infrastructure - Airport building

An airport passenger terminal building (345 square metres) located in the North Island, NZ also includes an airport traffic control tower. Skytec carried out a detailed engineering evaluation including site investigations and testing on the structures. In order to test effectively we had to work with the traffic controller to ensure there were no disruptions to the airport use. Testing also had to be minimal in terms of health and safety considerations.

Another challenge of this project was to address asbestos risk in the building and also in relation to physical testing.  This was able to be factored into our health and safety plan for the project.

Skytec added value by sensitively designing to provide for the airport building's heritage value, in terms of retaining aesthetics as well as internal and external heritage fabric. The terminal building is currently listed in the district plan.
